Preparation

  • Keep quilt layers separate – do not baste or pin.
  • Mark the top of the quilt top & backing with a pin if there is a preference.
  • Press the quilt top. Make sure all the seams lay flat.
  • Make sure all seams are secure, especially the ones at the edge of the quilt top.
  • Make sure all loose threads are trimmed. If they aren’t, they may show through on lighter fabric in the quilt.
  • Make sure the quilt top is square.
  • Make sure all the borders lay flat.
  • The quilt top should measure the same through the center and edged both horizontally and vertically.
  • Backing should be prewashed and pressed.
  • Seams in the backing fabric should have the selvages removed and be at least 1/2″ wide.
  • Backing fabric and batting should be squared and be 8″ longer in both length and width. For example, if your quilt measures 50″ by 80″ the backing and batting should measure 58″ by 88″.
